Recently caught the last show of a Jule Styne musical revue at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, performed by the AllRoads Theatre Company. Catherine McClenahan—who serves on the board—had a hand in the production.

I love show biz razzmatazz: big voices, high kicks, glamour, Broadway energy. Jule Styne’s range still astonishes me. From Gypsy and Funny Girl to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, he was eclectic and prolific, turning out one unforgettable standard after another.

“I’ve Heard That Song Before,”

“Penniless Bums,”

“Let Me Entertain You,”

“Don’t Rain On My Parade,”

“People,”

“Everything’s Coming Up Roses”

and, of course,

“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,”

and over 1,500 other songs.
