The Experiment — Eksperiments | Kārlis Smiltens
A set of seven greeting cards featuring The Experiment (Eksperiments), a vintage pencil sketch by Latvian artist Kārlis Smiltens (1921–2017).
Part laboratory, part workshop, and part darkly comic fantasy, The Experiment rewards a closer look. Strange figures crowd around bubbling vessels, peculiar instruments and mysterious machinery, while skeletons and other oddities watch from the walls. Smiltens fills the scene with the wit, curiosity and sharp observation that run throughout his work, inviting the viewer to invent a story about exactly what is going on.
Smiltens was a Latvian-born artist whose remarkable life took him from wartime Latvia to postwar England and eventually the United States, where he worked professionally as an artist and animator. Throughout his life, he continued to draw and paint the people, places, humor and experiences that captured his imagination.
Printed on bright white cardstock with a matte finish that complements the subtle tonal qualities of the original drawing. The cards are blank inside, making them suitable for correspondence, thank-you notes, birthdays, or simply sending an unusual piece of art to someone who will appreciate it.
