Word on the Street — Ielas runas | Kārlis Smiltens
A set of seven greeting cards featuring Word on the Street (Ielas runas), a painting by Latvian artist Kārlis Smiltens (1921–2017).
Three figures pause beside a brightly layered advertising kiosk, its colorful notices standing out against the muted buildings and gray-blue sky. With characteristic economy, Smiltens turns an ordinary street corner into a small human story—people gathering, looking, reading, and perhaps exchanging the latest news. The painting captures his keen eye for the everyday details of city life and the quiet interactions that animate a street.
Smiltens was a Latvian-born artist whose remarkable life took him from wartime Latvia to postwar England and eventually the United States, where he worked professionally as an artist and animator. Throughout his life, he continued to draw and paint the people, places, humor, and experiences that captured his imagination.
Printed on bright white cardstock with a matte finish that complements the subtle textures and colors of the original painting. The cards are blank inside, making them suitable for correspondence, thank-you notes, birthdays, or simply sending a distinctive piece of art to someone.
