Developmental Edit

The developmental stage is about making the story itself as strong as it can be before refining the language.

Objectives:

• Clarify the purpose of every scene, and ensure it advances plot or character.

• Strengthen transitions and chapter arcs to build momentum.

• Refine how a character’s inner world interacts with the external events.

• Enhance historical and cultural contexts for authenticity and flow.

• Examine character motivation and depth.

If your structure already feels solid, move directly to a Line Edit.

The process:

• Send a 10-20 page writing sample.

• Receive an estimate of hours needed for a developmental edit, depending on word count, complexity and manuscript readiness,

• Schedule the edit, may be 10 - 12 weeks out.

• Agree to terms on Freelance Editorial Agreement.

• Provide full manuscript in a Word .doc file (Pages is also ok.)

• After a full read-through, we meet (in person or on Zoom) to discuss structure and possibly outline the manuscript. Back and forth clarifications with the author are scheduled as needed.

• I deliver a 3-5 page editorial letter summarizing structural notes, and the marked-up manuscript with margin notes.

• The process may take 2 - 8 weeks.

• You revise based on feedback.

A developmental edit involves one or more full reads of the manuscript, focusing on the big picture—what happens and how it unfolds. I look at structure, pacing, energetic beats, point of view, character development, and theme throughout the work. The goal is to ensure the story holds together, the reader cares, and nothing essential is missing or misplaced—all while honoring the author’s unique voice.

· Hourly Editor Rate $80

· My work flow depends on the complexity and readiness of your manuscript,

· and the amount of research necessary to reach your objective.

· Developmental: 12 - 20 pages/hr

· Line editing: 4 - 10 pages/hr

· Copy editing: 10 - 12 pages/hr
